Clinical governance
Clinical governance describes the leadership behaviours, policies, procedures, responsibilities, relationships, planning, monitoring and improvement mechanisms that facilitate safe, quality clinical care and good clinical outcomes for each consumer. In a 2022 survey conducted by ARIIA, the Australian aged care workforce identified clinical governance as a priority topic for the sector. This was also supported in discussions with key organisations and stakeholders.
The Knowledge and Implementation Hub has gathered evidence on why clinical governance matters in aged care, along with learning and practical resources. These knowledge packages can support the aged care workforce in delivering safe, high-quality care to older Australians.
If the concept of clinical governance is new to you, this short click-through learning module provides a simple overview of its role and value to the aged care organisation.
Clinical governance evidence and resources
The Hub content on clinical governance is based on:
- A rapid narrative review of published research literature outlining why clinical governance matters in aged care and the barriers and facilitators associated with its use.
- An environmental scan for high-quality, freely accessible Australian resources to support the learning and practice needs of the sector.
This work was guided by an advisory group of researchers with expertise in the topic and people with experience in the sector.
Clinical governance themes
These themes are based on the findings from the narrative review. They are intended to provide general guidance for the aged care sector on the purpose and value of clinical governance in aged care and strategies and processes to encourage uptake and practice.
