Resparke Technology trading as Moove & Groove in partnership with Twilight Aged Care and the Australian Catholic University has been awarded an ARIIA grant for their project ‘Develop technology to facilitate staff and resident connection to deliver personalised reminiscing at scale for those living with dementia’.

Exceptional care results when there is a close relationship between the carer and the person to be cared for. Knowing someone's preferences facilitates personalised reminiscing for people living with dementia (PLWD). It is challenging for residents and staff to get to know each other rapidly, especially if they have different cultural backgrounds, language, limited one-to-one time together and residents have impaired cognition.

Moove & Groove (MG) is a world first program used by approximately 250 Australian care homes and 2000 care staff. It enables staff to select appropriate content from thousands of playlists, videos and podcasts and is delivered via tablets and wireless headphone technology. The challenge for staff has been having sufficient profile information at their fingertips to start conversations and select content. Australian Catholic University (ACU) have demonstrated that manual collection and personalisation of a resident’s MG preferences reduces ‘as needed psychotropic’ medications by 12%, and behaviours of concern by 70%. Currently personalisation is done manually by MG staff.

The project’s aim is to use technology to scale the ACU pilot to streamline and automate data collection and matching processes to personalise interactions at scale, facilitate better relationships, and in turn reduce behaviours of concern.

Background and Aims

We utilised an existing ACU research study proving the effectiveness of personalisation for PLWD as a basis to rebuild our platform and training essentially to be able to easily collect a residents preferences and auto match them to video and music choices.

What We Did

  • Codesigned a new technology solution with Twlight and ACU based off ACU research in MSU unit in NZ
  • Rebuilt the Moove and Groove platform with integrated personalisation and music streaming and rebranded the platform Resparke
  • Built a new version of online training around the new product
  • Rolled out the platform and hardware in 2 homes and built a new storage solution
  • Trained teams in 2 aged care homes in how to use the tool as a support for PLWD and to better manage changed behaviours
  • ACU conducted a research study of the program before and after the new technology was introduced and looked at the impact on both staff and residents

Outcomes

A new technology tool was developed to collect resident preferences and lifestory information and auto match those preferences to music and video selections dynamically. This enabled staff to better connect to residents and be able to easily offer a person centred experience. Staff were trained on the tool to be able to use to better manage changed behaviours of PLWD and the effectiveness of this intervention was measured. The ACU research demonstrated that;

  • For aged care staff, the Resparke sessions make their job easier and were a positive experience for them as staff. Sessions also assisted them to better connect with residents.
  • Sessions after the Resparke intervention were significantly better than the ones before that were using the old Resparke technology.
  • Resparke as a tool to reduce changed behaviours was proven to be successful see impact in Figure 1 below detailing how:

Resparke Session

A session of Resparke was 100% successful in eliminating mild and moderate change behaviours for the following categories: wandering/intrusive behaviours, physical behaviours and verbal behaviours.

Impact on Aged Care and Workforce

This means that we have built;

- a more EFFECTIVE TOOL to be used to deliver personalised experience to better manage dementia behaviours

- that the tool is EASIER for staff to use

- and Resparke has developed a BETTER way to onboard and train staff

Resources Developed

  • Entire new technology platform V1 – including new preference form
  • Customer Success Manual
  • New initial live training sequences and lesson plan developed
  • New training videos which are in the Resparke app including how to set up and collect personalised preferences of residents and use as part of daily care
